I am so relieved to finally be on spring break. I'm ridiculously busy this semester and I need a break, especially after bombing my history of the english language midterm. This year instead of going to Mexico or something, I'm off to Austin for sxsw and I'm fucking excited. I already have all my clothes picked out and I can't wait to go shopping there.
I'm not going to even post pictures of Alexander McQueen's last collection because I'm sure absolutely everyone has seen them already, but can I just say, holy crap. Don't get me wrong, his futuristic, sea creature collection with the armadillo shoes that got so much attention (partly in thanks to Lady Gaga of course) was really cool, but this latest collection is just plain stunning. I don't know how else to put it, but I'm mesmerized.
Also, need I say anything about the Telephone video? I think not. Love it.

Just looking for some inspiration as usual. School, walking to school and the cold are all taking a toll on my motivation to wear fun stuff. I have only a few pairs of shoes that I can walk the mile or so to school in without getting blisters, and because my school is mostly uggly clones and frat boys I'm even less motivated, when really that should make me want to look more individual. Waking up at six a couple days a week for work when its cold and dark doesn't help either. Blech. Whatevs, time to stop complaining immediately and man up (I think I've been saying man up a lot recently). I can't wait for summer.

Well school has started again and I'm thrilled. Sort of. At least my classes are interesting. I'm taking a Middle Eastern Studies class, the History of the English Language, English Sociolinguistics and Literature of the Southwest. Lots of reading this semester though, and I just spent about $300 on books, which makes me cringe when I think of all the other stuff I could have spent that money on. I got the majority of them from Half.com too, and only bought three from the U of A Bookstore (rip off alert). Even so, so fucking expensive I can't believe it.

Also, the lineup for Coachella just came out and I'm EXCITED. I was almost hoping it would be shitty so that if I couldn't afford to go I wouldn't feel so bad. So much for that. My favorites:

For this post I wanted to do something a little different. I was thinking recently that trends are generally ridiculous, often unflattering, and gone before I can keep up haha. It made me think how style is really what you make of it, how you are different, not how well you follow trends (or at least for me). To me it's really about having you're own look, whether it's particularly in style or not. So then I started thinking about what clothes I love that look good on me and that I hope I keep forever, because they are such pivotal pieces for my style.

Pieces I hope I keep forever:
-Vintage Salvatore Ferragamo men's extra large wool cardigan with very eighties looking gold buttons.
-Vintage kimono that I wear around the house instead of a nasty robe. I wear it out though too, it's too nice to keep inside.
-2nd hand Jean Paul Gaultier long sheer white shirt dress. It has these really high slits and mother of pearl (or something) buttons, and I wear it over dark leggings and a tank top and it's amazing.
-Vintage basic black peacoat.
-Amazing vintage draped black cocktail dress that used to belong to my grandmother.
-My elephant teapot that I bought at a knicknack store in Olympia (granted it's not a piece of clothing but I feel it's very me).
-Lots of white button down shirts, thrifted men's wool cardigans and anything gray (including Earl Grey Tea).
-High-waisted pants like some vintage disco pants I found in light blue polyester (ha) and ancient Wranglers.
-Thigh high socks
-Red nail polish, big rings, animal inspired jewelry and turquoise jewelry.
-I hope there is at least one piece of leopard patterned clothing in my closet at all times in honor my my paternal grandmother who was very glamorous in a slightly tacky way.

Another unproductive year gone. Haven't accomplished anything except that I'm finally a junior at the U of A. Woofuckinghoo. Did a lot of things I didn't really want to but that will be better in the long run (hopefully).

I need to get out of Tucson. But I feel so tied down because I'm still in school and I don't want to leave before I'm done because then I won't be able to take advantage of the rest of my scholarship.

I had an amazing christmas, hope everyone elses' was great too. This christmas eve, my family had about fifteen people over for dinner, and on Christmas day we went to a friends house and had even more amazing food. And wine, lots of wine. And Irish coffee and Harvey wall-bangers.

Yesterday my mom and I went shopping (neither of us had ever been shopping the day after Christmas before and I think I'll avoid it next year), but it wasn't all bad because she bought me the ridiculous/awesome leopard lace dress from Rodarte for Target (bottom right).

I was keeping an eye out for the ribcage dress, but in vain. There was a surprising amount of stuff left, but only three of the leopard dresses so I'll have to take mine in a bit at the hips since I had to get a few sizes bigger than I normally would have. Pictures to come hopefully.

I am obsessed with the braids at the Alexander Wang SS 10 show. I've been trying to grow my hair out, but since I have had it very short for a long time, its taking quite a while. I am in love with these braids and tried to imitate this look a couple days ago, but as my hair only goes a little ways past my shoulders, you can imagine the result was kind of pitiful.

Gee lets think about this.
1) They have laid off tons of teachers recently.
2) They have asked the other ones to teach more classes with less pay.
3) The electric bill at the U of A is in the millions each month. Arizona has more sun than we need but hardly anyone takes advantage of solar paneling. (The U of A did actually cover one of their parking garages with solar panels this semester but this gets in the way of my rant. Also, it's just one garage. Hopefully with the money they save they can tile more roofs with solar panels.)
4) I like making lists.
5) They told me this semester that all the classes for my major and my minor are full so I can only take electives next year that won't even count toward my degree. My scholarship only lasts four years and they are making me take a bull shit semester.
6) The classes I need to take are full because they keep letting in students even though there is no room.
7) The leftover teachers are pissed because they have to teach huge classes.
8) There is a class taught in Centennial Hall where performances are usually held. My friend's dad teaches it, I thinks it's intro to Oceanography or something. At any rate there are 1200 students in the class. Yes, 1200.
9) All the bike racks are always full and campus is ridiculously crowded.
10) I bump into at least one person a day who is walking in the bike lane because apparently they can't see the lines and symbols of bikes painted on the ground.
11) Half the students are in sororities or fraternities, so the campus is basically a big cloning facility.
12) Big classes take attendance with these horrible 'clickers' that you use to enter answers to questions during the lecture. In my parents' day it was your choice whether or not you went to class and I think it should still be that way.

I would keep going but I'm just getting pissed. But I don't want to be angry so I'll just leave you with this:

Well in spite of trying to avoid mainstream music and shit, I have fallen for the lovely Lady Gaga. Good god she's nuts, just look at her new video (in which she wears Alexander McQueen!).

My second favorite video of hers is Dirty Rich, something something, I'm not sure what it's called. In case you weren't sure, I don't really listen to her music which I don't think is anything special in and of itself (that's a weird expression) even though it is catchy. Her videos though, are another thing altogether. The ridiculousness, the fashion, the Alexander McQueen! I love it.

Also I like her attitude. Apparently she learned to play the piano at four and wrote her first piano ballad at 13, so there's actually some talent there, as well as great taste in fashion ('great' is relative, maybe ridiculously awesome is a better way to put it).
I also love her because of this: "My grandmother is basically blind, but she can make out the lighter parts, like my skin and hair. She says, "I can see you, because you have no pants on." So I'll continue to wear no pants so that my grandma can see me".
And this: "I love Dolce & Gabbana. I love Versace. I love the crazy, more eccentric stuff. I can't pay my rent, but I'm f---ing gorgeous". I can commiserate, except that I make much much less money than she does and look much much less fabulous, but ah well.

In case you were wondering, yes I am a bit tipsy. I may or may not admit my love for Lady Gaga while sober, but I got a bottle of wine as a tip for the last wedding I catered, because apparently that's what happens at catering. I like it.

I'm pissed.
So I was reading Esquire at work when I came across a story called An Insurrection, which is apparently the winner of a fiction contest Esquire was having. Read it here and form you own opinions but I think its terrible. Absolute shit. For one thing, the way this piece is written makes me think of some little seventeen year old, trying so hard to be seen as intelligent and deep. The second paragraph of the story is this:

"Fitz felt the feel-good attitude of Boston fading. All the guilt and grief of unknowingly launching unthwarted terrorism had manifested in sheepish concern for the homeless and polite after-yous for all pepper-flecked future victims of foreclosure. A red knit cap, a soaking-wet army jacket, an edible mustache, and the smell of patchouli trawled for spare change farther down the T platform. Beebs watched Fitz repeatedly not fork over charity."

Wtf. I have no patience for writing that beats around the bush so badly. If you're talking about a homeless man, just say so. Its ridiculous and wordy and round a bout. I'm sure I can find many less superficial faults with this story than just its tone and wordiness, but I don't want to read it a second time, one was bad enough thank you.

But really Esquire? This is a winning piece of fiction? Really?

So as I've already mentioned, I'm not too excited about all the 80's/90's styles coming back. I can't help it, I have never been a fan of the fashion of either of these decades.

I love Freja, but it's too much I tell you!

Lots of lace and florals at Dolce and Gabana, which actually could have been much worse, but still is a little too nineties for me. I do like a small amount of lace, or a nice floral, but its all about the execution.

And here are some shoulder pads just for good measure. My shoulders are already big enough but thanks anyways.

So I've been hungering for something new, not something that just reminds me of repeat styles I didn't like in the first place. And I think I've found it with Pringle of Scotland:

I love love the neutral colors, especially the grey which is my most favorite color.
Both Pringle of Scotland and Preen have this wonderful grey/yellow thing going on that I knew I loved for a reason.

I'll forgive the slight shoulder pad because 1) skinny models can do shoulder pads, and 2) grey and yellow!

As far as new and interesting goes, you can almost never go wrong with Dries van Noten, but I'm still a bigger fan of minimalist neutrals.

So this week I have gone hardcore vegan for the purpose of a cleanse. I stopped eating red meat a while ago but recently I've been feeling very fat and sluggish, and generally not so good, so I decided a cleanse was just what I needed. But now it's been going so well I'm thinking of going vegan for good. Now when I say vegan for good I probably don't mean it like people might think. I intend to be completely vegan when I'm eating on my own, but if I'm at someone's house I'm not going to be rude and not eat what they are serving, but I'll def stick to vegetarian dishes at the least. I'm sure most actual vegans will scoff at me, but I have to be practical don't cha know.
But anyway, I've been having fun looking up vegan recipes, and I feel so much better already. I'm also excited because last night I made an awesome thing with ribbons of zucchini and carrot instead of noodles, asparagus, broccoli, spinach, and a green curry sauce. Nom.
I do like the whole 'everything in moderation' but apparently I'm just not very good at moderating what I eat. I also like the raw food movement that's going on, but I don't think it's the way to go for me. I definitely think some things need to be cooked, like spinach to diminish the oxalic acid, and broccoli, stuff like that. But I do try to eat as many things raw as possible. And lentils and avocado with almost everything.
This is probably another one of my silly health kicks, but I'm hoping this will stick because I really do feel so much better eating this way.
One last thing: this blog is great for ideas and reasons to go vegan.

Tonight I found this:

I used to be a Biology major because I wanted to be a wildlife biologist and do stuff like this. Yes even if it includes getting humped by a rare parrot. Unfortunately I am not smart enough in the sciency and mathish areas so I went for my second love, English, which as I've already discussed, I'm sort of doubting if I can do either. O well. Found the video on Cute Overload by the way. Only one of my favorite sites ever.

Tonight I'm excited because when I went over to my parents house for dinner, I found an old camera that they said I could have. It's an old Olympus that used to belong to my grandmother and is probably 25-30 years old. I'm not a fan of digital cameras, so this is perfect and I can't wait to buy some actual film and use it.
I'm also excited because I got some sweet purple boots off Ebay.

I deleted my facebook a while back and I am so glad I did. Facebook is nice for keeping in touch with people sure, but it was turning into twitter, and I was never on board with twitter (hopefully I don't end up eating my words later, but I'm pretty set in my ways). Anyways, I kept getting status updates from a couple of chumps from my middle school that I friended for some reason. Their newsfeeds always said something like "at work" day after day, or else they would post five status updates a day. Ridiculous. I don't care if you're at work, tell me something interesting or funny.
Yes I am a mild hypocrite for having a blog, but I'm not making anyone read this. At any rate, suck it facebook, myspace, twitter, and all of the above. I'm glad my computer doesn't recognize you as being actual words.

On a different subject, I was wondering recently why I'm an English major. I'm no good at writing papers, and I'm terrible at grammar. I am an excellent speller, but that's about it. I like it much better than when I was a Biology major, but that's partly because my grades are so much better now. Ah well, hopefully I'll figure it out sometime.

So here's a post dedicated to a small section of my favorite things in honor of my new blog title which I dig much more than the original name.

I love raccoons. It's something about their faces and their little hands.

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. Very good.

The Stranger by Camus. One of my all time favorites, someday I want to write something inspired by it.

The Swimmer by John Cheever, which I have mentioned previously; Where are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates; and another short story called Two Brothers by Brian Evenson. It is in my favorite genre - southern gothic, and it is amazing and gory and dark and I think everyone should read it. Just read all of them for good measure.

Ridiculous high heels. I lust after them.
